KeepSolid Launches Freemium VPN Lite Service | News & Opinion

Best known for the VPN Unlimited service, KeepSolid is targeting mobile users with VPN Lite, which is free, but you’ll need to upgrade and pay for the Turbo option if you want all of VPN Lite’s protection features active on your iOS or Android device.

Android and iOS users looking for better protection and privacy on their devices have a new, free VPN option to experiment with this week. It’s from well-known VPN Unlimited provider KeepSolid, only this service is called VPN Lite and it uses a freemium model.

VPN Lite requires no registration in order to use the free version. Once installed on your mobile device it offers 128-bit encryption, relies on the IKEv2 tunnelling protocol, shows no ads, and includes 24/7 customer support. However, it’s limited to just one VPN server. That’s where the freemium bit comes in.

If you try VPN Lite and enjoy the experience, there’s a VPN Lite Turbo option. It adds 256-bit encryption, allows you to choose from over 400 VPN servers and doesn’t limit switching between them, and improves upon the IKEv2 protocol by adding KeepSolid Wise protocols. Wise is KeepSolid’s solution to a stealth mode for the internet. It’s very difficult to detect and block according to the company, meaning the Web remains open to you when using it.

Turbo isn’t free, but it isn’t exactly expensive either. A monthly plan costs $4.99, but if you sign up for a year it’s just $29.99, which works out to around $2.50 per month. This is the plan KeepSolid would like you to sign up for, but is happy for you to exist on the free plan if it suits your needs. As VentureBeat points out, though, expect to be tempted to upgrade on a regular basis.

Opting for a free VPN service can be a risk because you are left wondering what the up side is for the provider, or need to prepare yourself for the inevitable ads. However, KeepSolid is a known entity and PCMag has awarded it an Editor’s Choice for its more expensive and multi-platform VPN Unlimited service on iPhone. VPN Lite is clearly an entry-level alternative, but one that the company is surely hoping will lead to many Turbo, and ultimately VPN Unlimited paid subscriptions.
